The annual LUNAFEST event, launched in 2001 to support female artists and their works, is sponsored by LUNA, the manufacturer of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women. Merchandise donated by Liz Claiborne, Inc. was raffled and all proceeds from the event benefited My Sisters’ Place of Westchester and the Breast Cancer Fund.

Spring 2006

Dowell Lecture

As part of CNR's Women's History Month programming, the 2006 Dowell Lecture was given by producer/director Maryann T. Manelski. After her remarks,"Does My Feminism Go With These Shoes? Women, Power and Politics," there was a screening of her documentary on women and politics entitled, Running in High Heels.

The film follows a few months in the life of 29-year-old Emily Csendes, as she wraps up campaigning for her first political office -- a State Senate seat in New York’s 29th District. As a Republican running a small time local campaign in big city Democratic territory, Emily inspires hope from many people regardless of their political leanings. “Running in High Heels” skillfully weaves notable women from the left and right of the American political spectrum, and touches upon emotional hot buttons such as victimhood, feminism, the gender gap, and competition among women. Most importantly, this film is about what women say about politics and how women behave in politics.

Prior to directing and appearing in “Running in High Heels,” Maryann spent 17 years working behind the scenes in film, television and home video distribution. She graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in Film and Television.

Spring 2003

TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 2003.
Brown Bag luncheon with film followed by panel discussion (light refreshments and beverages will be provided).

Maura Ballroom

"Speaking through the Bars: Listening to Women In and Out of Prison."

We will view the documentary, "What I Want My Words To Do To You" by Madeleine Gavin, Judith Katz, and Gary Sunshine. This film focuses on a writing group led by playwright and activist Eve Ensler at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. From these classes emerged a powerful writing community in which women prisoners from very different strata of society help each other tell their stories.

Following the film, panelists from the Women's Prison Association (New York, NY) -- including Eric Ortega, Mary Johnson and Alexandra Villano -- will lead a discussion of the film and surrounding issues, as we seek to better understand the needs of and ways to support women in prison and women ex-prisoners transitioning to the community.
