In a multicultural world that is in rapid
transition, understanding other languages and cultures than your own is
essential for personal and professional development. Language learning in
cultural context enriches one's life perspective. Language students in any major field who have a minimum cumulative index of 2.7 are encouraged to study abroad for a semester, a year, or a summer. For credit to be awarded, the program of study requires prior approval by the Study Abroad Program Director, Dr. Andre Beauzethier, and the student's department chair (consult Study Abroad Procedures). Students may enroll in one of the department's Bridging Cultures courses, which have been offered in Guadaloupe, Egypt, Mexico, or in its Study Abroad program in Tours, France, or Alicante, Spain. In addition, students have applied to other programs, such as the American Institute for Foreign Study, the American Academy in Rome, the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Those who have taken the opportunity to study overseas have found the experience life-altering. Nisha Feliz '06 writes of her Summer '04 study in Tours: "It is an incredible experience to immerse yourself in another culture and learn how people from other countries live on a daily basis." Vanessa Ceron '05, who studied abroad in 2003 for a semester in London and then for a summer in Granada, observes "My classes at the University of Granada certainly improved my Spanish, but my stay there improved my personal value system and my appreciation for foreign cultures." Stacy Coleman describes her study in Alicante as "one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and my experiences there have continued to have a tremendous impact on me." Emily Williams found that images from her summer in Paris permeated her plans for her senior art show, which explored the effect of travel on the artist.

There are two CNR scholarships available to undergraduates which can make the Study Abroad option a reality. One is the Russel & Deborah Taylor Foundation Scholarship for Semester-Abroad Study. It was instituted in Spring 1998 by Dr. Russel R. Taylor, Professor Emeritus for SAS juniors and seniors with a GPA of at least 3.0. "The foundation," says Dr. Taylor, "has attempted to make awards only to those students who would not be able to finance the cost of study abroad without assistance." The second is a memorial scholarship in honor of Dr. John N. Colaneri, Professor Emeritus of languages at Iona College, who also taught Italian part time for 14 years at CNR. Estella R. Ayuk '09 is studying in Senegal as the '08 Colaneri scholar. Interested students should contact the Study Abroad Director, Dr. Andre Beauzethier by mail or phone at (914) 654-5852, for more information about available Study Abroad programs, the procedures, and the Study Abroad Application, which must be submitted prior to registration. |
