We are confident that our
language majors can enter any career they choose, because our graduates can be
found in almost every field.
About 49% of our alumnae earned post-baccalaureate degrees and, as might be expected, are working in Education, the profession of their choice, filling a wide variety of positions in K-12 and higher education. Many of our majors enrolled as undergraduates in one of the several teacher certification programs at CNR and obtained New York State Teacher Certification. The are teaching not only the languages in which they were trained (French, Spanish, Latin, German, Italian), but have added other competencies, such as English, linguistics, comparative literature, religion, English as a Second Language, bi-lingual education, health. Many graduates entered associated areas, such as curriculum development, library science (universities are seeking foreign language majors for their librarian programs), special education, guidance, counseling, and all levels of administration. Some 60% of our graduates self-report a choice of career outside the field of education. These range from entry-level positions to CEO's in the corporate world of management, finance, securities and investments, banking, insurance, law, real estate, publishing, accounting, marketing, retail, personnel, media-communications, public relations, and computer technology. Some chose instead to work in small businesses or be self-employed, to free-lance or to own their own company. Others make use of their language skills in cultural institutions, health areas, social services, or government, where they fill positions in the armed services, on the county, state, or national level, in international organizations at the United Nations or in other countries. To be more specific, we invite you to meet two of our alumnae, who are featured in the department's ALUMNAE PROFILES:
