The Art Program at The College of New Rochelle aims to maintain as much flexibility as possible.The faculty will assist you in customizing your major to fit your career and creative goals.Through its constantly evolving curriculum, the program will empower you with the options and the diverse background you need to pursue your career. The heart of the Art Program is the four-semester foundations program that consists of a series of different courses in a variety of artistic media and art history. Following the foundations program, students are free to take elective courses and begin specializing in a particular area of art.

 

 

 

 

Studio Art

The Art Department offers a Studio Art Program leading to either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.)

The B.A. DEGREE
In addition to the requirements of the School of Arts and Sciences, the B.A. degree in Studio Art requires 90 credits in liberal studies and 30 credits in professional studio courses. A candidate for the B.A. degree in Studio Art must also participate in a group exhibition.

THE B.F.A. DEGREE

In addition to the requirements of the School of Arts and Sciences, the B.F.A. degree in Studio Art requires 60 credits in liberal studies and 60 credits in professional studies courses. Candidates participate in a senior exhibit that demonstrates a special proficiency. Seniors who have demonstrated outstanding competency may be chosen by the Art Department faculty to present a solo exhibition.

 

                           Art Therapy

The Art Department offers a pre-professional program in art therapy. This is a combined art and psychology program, focused on intensive training for women who want to bring the healing, nurturing qualities of art to help adults and children in need. In schools, hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and in other public and private institutions dedicated to the crucial part of health care, the art therapist brings the joy of artistic activity to the relief of the physically, mentally, and emotionally challenged. In this program, the Art Therapy Major is provided with foundation studies in Studio Art and extensive training in psychology to prepare for graduate work as an art therapist. These important State-approved BS and BFA programs can lead to professional registration as an art therapist once the student receives a Master's degree.

REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the requirements of the School of Arts and Sciences, the degree in Art Therapy requires 60 credits in liberal studies. These courses must include:

* Survey of Western Art
* Survey of Indian/Islamic or Eastern or African Art
* Twentieth Century Art in Europe or Art Since 1945
* General Psychology
* Psychology of Personality
* Abnormal Psychology
* Dynamics of Group Process


In addition, Art Therapy majors must complete the following professional studies courses:

* Design Foundation I
* Design Foundation II
* Design Foundation III
* Fundamentals of Drawing
* Figure Drawing
* Fundamentals of Painting
* Fundamentals of Sculpture
* Orientation to Art Therapy
* Theories and Techniques of Art Therapy


Finally, the Art Therapy major participates in a group or solo show in their senior year. Each Art Therapy student must also complete a three-credit internship supervised by an art therapist in a therapeutic setting.

Art Education

The BS or BFA Art Education Major focuses her attention on studio fundamentals and electives, liberal studies, and courses in education. This triple route combines proficiency in the fine arts with New York State provisional certification for teaching art in grades K through 12.

REQUIREMENTS

An candidate for the BS or BFA degrees in Art Education must complete 60 credits in liberal studies and 60 credits in professional studies. The 60 credits in liberal studies must include:

* Survey of African or Eastern or Indian-Islamic Art

During her senior year, each Art Education major participates in a group or solo senior exhibition.

                          Art History

To prepare for a career in art history, the department helps the student achieve a foundation in historical scholarship, professional contacts, and positions related to her chosen field.

For the Art History Major, the department requires courses in Studio Art with a concentration in Art History within the College's liberal arts curriculum. This Program includes survey courses, independent studies, seminars (incorporating lectures, discussions, and museum visits in small group settings) and internships in galleries, museums, and other professional exhibition spaces.

REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the requirements of the School of Arts and Sciences, the Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History requires 90 credits in liberal studies, a minimum of 21 credits in Art History, and 9 credits in Studio Art. The 90 credits in liberal studies can include additional Art History courses.

The BA in Art History lays the foundation for jobs in arts-related fields including:
art dealer, art critic, corporate curator, museum educator, public relations, writer/editor, arts administration, exhibition design, gallery director, museum curator, visual resource curator, arts lawyer, private art consultant, art collection management, art book design, publishing and sales, conservation and restoration, university/college professor.
