CENTENNIAL OF THE COLLEGE OF NEW ROCHELLE ALUMNAE/I
ASSOCIATION

On May 27, 1908 the nine graduates of the College of
St. Angela founded the Alumnae Association. The
Association now numbers over 35, 000 graduates from
four Schools.
Alumnae met formally and informally, often returning
to campus to visit the Ursulines who welcomed them
on Founder’s Day and Commencement. In 1939, Mary
Shaughnessey ’19 founded Alumnae College, an annual
reunion which featured a guest speaker and sessions
with lay and Ursuline professors, a time of
intellectual stimulation, fun, and reminiscences of
“back when.” Friendships forged in college continue
to endure over many decades.
In 1924, the Alumnae News began; a magazine
sent to alumnae the world over (became Quarterly
in 1976). Issues feature a particular theme and
continue to carry notes on alums. The CNR online
alumnae/i website also connects graduates.
Alumnae became the major fundraisers for the
cloistered Ursulines and held events in various
areas of the country where local chapters were
formed; they were and continue to be instrumental in
recruiting new students.
After incorporation and by-laws were made in the
1920’s, an Executive Secretary was hired to
coordinate communication and events with alumnae;
this developed into the Alumnae Director’s office,
now part of CNR’s College Advancement. A Board of
Directors, comprised of representatives of each of
the four Schools of CNR is a vital link between
administration and alumnae/i.
