Statement
on the
Death of Rosa Parks
It is with great
sorrow
that The College of New Rochelle acknowledges the death of Rosa
Parks. Her courage in 1955 helped give birth to the Civil Rights
Movement and brought about unprecedented changes in our country’s
history.
CNR is proud of
its
connection to Rosa Parks through our School of New Resources, an
international model for adult learning programs. In 1987, we renamed
our Harlem campus on West 125th Street in honor of Mrs. Parks, to
recognize her strength, courage, and commitment to helping individuals
realize their full potential.
Since the College
was
founded in 1904, it has been committed to intellectual development
through the maintenance of the highest standards of academic excellence
and educational growth. CNR reaches out to those who have not had
previous access to higher education, emphasizes the concept of lifelong
learning, and provides opportunities for spiritual growth in a context
of freedom and ecumenism. It is our priority to provide a supportive
atmosphere which draws out the very best in each person. It is in
this spirit that the Rosa Parks campus today provides 800 students with
access to a college degree.
