Leading the nation in rebounding with 16.8 rebounds per game, CNR’s
outstanding basketball senior center Ruchelle Austin was named
the PrestoSports/Metropolitan Basketball Writers’ Association (MBWA)
Player of the Week during the week of December 14. The Metropolitan
Basketball Writers’ Association is made up of the New York City area
college basketball writers.

In winning the award, Ruchelle Austin becomes not only the first CNR
Basketball
player to ever be honored by the MBWA, but she is also the first Hudson
Valley Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Basketball player to ever
earn Player of the Week honors. Austin won the award over a field of
more than 70 candidates across all three divisions. The Blue Angels
return to action on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 when they host
USMMA-Kings Point at Sarah Lawrence for a 7:00 p.m. game.

President
Sweeny welcomed members of the College Community to
the annual Christmas party and dinner on Friday, December 14, 2007 in
the parlors of Leland Castle on the Main Campus.

At the “Christmas in The Castle” event, CNR’s faculty and
staff had an opportunity to visit with colleagues from all of the
College’s campuses.

President Sweeny and two representatives from the United States Marine
Corps
“check out” the toys collected by the faculty and staff of CNR for the
U.S. Marines “Toys for Tots” program.

Immediately following the Christmas party, a reading of It's A Wonderful Life
starring President Sweeny as George Bailey was presented in Romita
Auditorium. Thirty members of

On December 9, 2007, an opening
reception was held for the Castle Gallery's winter exhibition Fifteen Years: The Art of Laura James,
which runs
from December 2, 2007 through February 24, 2008. The exhibition, curated by Jennifer Zazo,
focuses on a 15-year retrospective of the work of Laura James. m o r e

Born in Brooklyn,
New
York, Laura James is a self-taught painter of Antiguan heritage. She
paints religious subjects and visual dramatizations of Bible stories
using iconography found in Ethiopian Christian Art. Ms. James is also
an award-winning artist of secular works. Using bright colors,
intricate patterns, and sometimes surreal imagery, she paints women,
families, and scenes of everyday life.

On December 3, 2007, the College Community gathered on Chidwick Walk
for the blessing of the College tree and crèche.

Campus Ministry Director Helen Wolf, Executive Vice President Dr.

students, faculty, and staff in this annual Christmas Season blessing
of the crèche and the lighting of the tree.

On Thursday, December 29, 2007, Robert Makunu of Kenya spoke to School
of Nursing students in Romita Auditorium on the main campus of CNR. Mr.
Makunu, who is the Deputy HIV/AIDS Unit Manager from CRS Kenya, spoke
on the importance of development and implementation of HIV and AIDS
control within the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) program. The
title of his talk was “Restoring Hope in Africa: Community Based Care
for HIV.” Mr. Makunu is pictured here with (l.-r.) Professor Elizabeth

The Fall CNR Town Meeting was held in Romita Auditorium on November 13,
2007. President Sweeny welcomed the College Community and brought
everyone up to date on topics such as the progress of the Wellness
Center, Pope Benedict XVI's upcoming visit to the United States, and
then turned the Town Meeting over to Dr. Dorothy Escribano, Senior Vice
President and the Deans of CNR's four schools to discuss enrollment
management. Executive Vice President, Dr. Ellen Curry Damato, and
Lenore Carpinelli, Director of College Relations, then spoke on current
and future advertisement campaigns for the College. The presentations
were followed with a Q & A session.

CNR’s Gospel Choir hosted Gospel Café Night on Friday, November
9 in
Maura Ballroom. An evening of music, dance, fellowship and praise with
the CNR Gospel Choir and guest performers. Homemade baked goods were
coupled with praise-filled performances. Students on the main campus,
said Helen Wolf, Director of Campus Ministry, “came together to praise
God in a fun way – through poems, step dancing, solo songs, dances to
praise God. Over 160 people were in attendance.” The homemade
baked

On November 11, more than 150 people attended the award ceremony for
The College of New Rochelle's 14th Annual High School Women Artists
Exhibition. In announcing the winners, Dr. Dick Thompson, Dean of the
CNR’s School of Arts & Sciences said, “Art is central to the life
of the College and it is central to our everyday lives. The creative
work you have shared with us contributes to that vision and to our
greater appreciation of the ordinary and extraordinary in life.”

On November 1, 2007, photojournalist and Fulbright Scholar Haider Abdul
Razak
spoke on the main campus to students in SAS’s International Studies
Program.
A guest of Dr. Anne McKernan, Associate Professor of History in the
School
of Arts & Sciences, Haider Abdul Razak is currently studying at The
New
School for Social Research in New York City.

Born in Germany, Haider Abdul Razak grew up in Tanzania, Kenya,
Ethiopia,
Bulgaria, Spain, Turkey and Portugal before attending high school and
college
in Iraq. After college, he joined the U.S. military as an embedded
journalist
to cover the war in Iraq for the U.S. and international media
organizations.

Herbert
Gentry’s Inner Dance, an exhibit featuring the works of the late
artist
Herbert Gentry, opened

October at the Gordon Parks Gallery and Cultural Arts

located on the School of New Resources’ John Cardinal O’Connor
Campus. The exhibit also featured “Personal Anthology,” works by
Aiki.

On October 25, 2007, The College of New Rochelle began its Founder’s
Day
celebration with a Liturgy of the Eucharist in Holy Family Chapel.
Following the liturgy, a luncheon was held in the Student Campus
Center.
Speaking about the history of the Ursulines and The College of New
Rochelle
were Helen Wolf, Director of Campus Ministry; Dr. Joan Bailey, Special
Assistant
to the President for Mission & Identity; Sr. Martha Counihan,

On Thursday,
October 11, 2007, The
Shroud
of Turin & Other Mysteries was the Fall 2007 topic of The
Ursuline Institute
held at Mooney Center's Romita Auditorium on the main campus.
Mary
Virginia Orna, O.S.U., Scientist-in-Residence at the College, discussed
“uncovering
traces of the past through science.” Sr. Mary Virginia Orna showed how
applying
methods of archaeological chemistry scientists and non-scientists alike
can
gain a better understanding of the past. In her talk she showed how
analysis
of the techniques used to produce objects in the past can support or
undermine
the claims to authenticity of such famous artifacts as the Shroud of
Turin.

October 4, in celebration of Italian Heritage Month, the College hosted

Bersaglieri, a marching band visiting from Abruzzi, Italy.

4, the twenty-ninth consecutive year of positive operating results for

College.

Twelve students, including Sherly
Mathew
SAS’10 and Sarah Hnath SAS ’09., in Dr. Faith Kostel-Hughes’s class on
Environmental
Biology took a half-day long kayaking trip on the Long Island Sound to
see
“up close and personal” some of the organisms living in the Sound. They
also
observed tides and other physical properties of the water, and
identified
and experienced some of the human impacts to the environment.

The College of New Rochelle’s Sixth Annual Golf & Tennis Outing was
held
on September 25, 2007. The outing was held at Wykagyl Country Club.
Golfers
played on the newly renovated Coore/Crenshaw Course.
Over one hundred golfers and tennis players enjoyed brunch, cocktails
and dinner before and after their games.

The College
Community gathered at midday on Friday, September 21, 2007, to
participate
in a Prayer Service at the Statue of St. Angela on Chidwick Walk of the
main
campus. Organized by Campus Ministry, this CNR prayer service is part
of
the International Day of Peace, a day the United Nations General
Assembly
established by resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the
General
Assembly. It is observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence.

Campus Ministry
sponsored an Overnight Student Retreat on September 21 and 22, 2007.
Peer
Ministers Natasha Hill, Kerry Deas, and Araba Adjei-koranteng
coordinated
the retreat experience under the supervision of CNR Chaplain, Fr.
Joseph
Flynn, OFM Cap. The retreat theme was “Our Walk With
God,”
and it explored ways for students to strengthen their ongoing
relationship
with God. The retreat was held at St. Mary’s Retreat House in
Sloatsburg,
NY.

14, 2007, the College Community came together for their annual Opening

School Year Meeting. President Sweeny, along with the Vice Presidents

the meeting, a dinner was held to honor faculty and staff celebrating
service
anniversaries and share a meal at the beginning of the fall semester.

evening started off with a toast by Dr. Ellen Curry Damato, Executive

President, in acknowledgement of Dr. Stephen J. Sweeny's tenth year as

of The College of New Rochelle.

On September 11, 2007 at
12:30 p.m., an Interfaith Prayer Service was
held in Holy Family Chapel to remember the tragic events of September
11,
2001. Led by Helen Wolf, Director of Campus Ministry, a second service
also
took place in the evening so students unable to attend during the day
because
of class schedules could be part of the prayer remembrances in the
chapel.

The names of all of CNR students and graduates who lost their lives in
the
Twin Towers were read from the altar, and prayers of the major
religions
were read by members of the Campus Ministry Professional Staff and Peer
Ministers
