On the afternoon of December 8, 2005, the College Community gathered on Chidwick Walk for the blessing of the College tree and crèche.

C N R  T O W N  M E E T I N G


The Fall CNR Town Meeting was held in Romita Auditorium on Tuesday, November 29, 2005.  


President Sweeny welcomed the College Community and brought everyone up to date on topics such as the progress of the Wellness Center. Each of the Vice Presidents gave reports from their respectives areas, and a question and answer session followed.


All CNR campuses were able to participate in the meeting through video streaming provided by the Office of  Information Systems.


B E N E F I T S  F A I R


CNR’s annual fall Benefits Fair sponsored by the Office of Human Resources for the faculty and staff of CNR was held on the main campus on Friday, November 18.  As always, representatives from the providers and vendors to the College were on hand to answer questions.


Visitors to the Fair had the opportunity to experience vision screenings, massage therapy, reflexology, Reiki and hand massages.

To mark its centennial year season, the Dramatic Society of The College of New Rochelle presented their Fall production of Cabaret in Romita Auditorium on CNR’s Main Campus, November 4 - 12, 2005. The production was directed by Laurie Peterson Castaldo, with choreography by Juan Borona and music direction by Kurt Kelley.

Acting coach to award winning actors and author of The Intent to Live: Achieving Your True Potential as an Actor, Larry Moss, spoke in Romita Auditorium on Monday evening, November 21, 2005. Mr. Moss, who has coached such Academy Award winners as Helen Hunt and Hilary Swank, and is currently directing the critically acclaimed play RFK in New York City, discussed the craft of acting with members of CNR’s Student Theatre Ensemble.

On Thursday, November 10, 2005, the Rosa Parks Campus of CNR held a special memorial service and celebration of the life of Rosa Parks. Among those posing with a photo of the legendary civil rights leader is Acting Director Barbara Adams, Elnora Harrison, Adjunct Faculty, and Ken Jones, Adjunct Faculty and journalist who spoke at the service.

The Ursuline Institute presented a panel discussion on religion and politics in Romita Auditorium on Thursday, November 17, 2005. The panel of CNR faculty included (l. to r.) Pearl Sullivan, Coordinator of Retention Systems at the Co-op City Campus of the School of New Resources;  Dr. Nelson Ong, Associate Professor of Political Sciences, School of Arts & Sciences; and Dr. Dennis Ryan, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, School of Arts & Sciences. The two hour panel presentation and discussion was one of many special events presented by the Ursuline Institute.

Althea Graham, SAS ’07 (r.) was one of ten SAS students enrolled in a course on Foundations of Social Work Practice who spent time recently with adult residents of Willow Towers, an assisted living facility near the college’s main campus in New Rochelle. The trip to Willow Towers was to help students learn about new ways of caring for our aging population.

An awards ceremony and reception was held on Sunday, November 13, 2005 for the 12th Annual High School Women Artists Competition. This year's show was the largest in its 12-year history, featuring the works of 121 artists from 38 high schools throughout the United States.  m o r e

Healthy Campus 2010, a successful collaboration between the Health Services Office and the School of Nursing at The College of New Rochelle, was held on the Main Campus on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, from 10 am to 4 pm.  CNR nursing students offered presentations on health promotion topics to the CNR community, senior citizens from Willow Towers, an assisted living facility, and students from Isaac E. On Wednesday, November 2, 2005, more than 75 students from New Rochelle High School (NRHS) attended an on-site information session on career opportunities in nursing.  Four seniors from the School of Nursing at The College of New Rochelle visited NRHS as part of a five-week outreach effort to local high schools, middle schools and grammar schools.  CNR plans on visiting schools in Mt. Vernon, Pelham, Bronx and Queens through the end of November.

Helen Wolf, Director of Campus Ministry, accompanied two CNR student representatives to the International Student Leaders Symposium held at the Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in late October. The CNR students, Gabrielle Carrasquillo, SN’08, and Megan Skrip, SAS’07 joined eighty-six student leaders from twenty-three universities and eight different countries who met to discuss issues of global concerns. Members of the School of Arts and Sciences’ Honors Program attended the 2005 National Collegiate Honors Council’s annual conference in St. Louis, Missouri, October 27 – 30. The students attending with Honors Program Director Dr. Amy Bass were (above): Sara Weigand SAS’08; Kathryn Tyranski SAS ’06 and Elizabeth Skrip SAS’06. The conference, entitled “Gateway to Exploration and Discovery,” brought together faculty and students from honors programs around the country to present research on a variety of topics.

New York State Assemblyman George Latimer, who represents the New Rochelle Campus, visited CNR on Thursday, October 27, to participate in a Domestic Violence Awareness Day on campus. This event, organized by Student Development and Programs, Government Relations, and the Student Government Association, is part of New York State’s observance of domestic violence awareness month. Freshman student Jee Hee Yoon sends a quick email to her congressional representatives urging them to “Stop the Raid on Student Aid.” Organized by Terri Eberle Boyle, Director of Government Relations at CNR, laptops were set up in the Student Campus Center so students could go on-line and email their representatives about the proposed cuts to student aid.

On October 20, 2005, The College of New Rochelle began its Founder’s Day celebration with a Liturgy of the Eucharist in Holy Family Chapel.


Following the liturgy, a luncheon was held in the Student Campus Center along with the presentation of the Serviam Awards for 2005. 
Five students from the School of Nursing, School of Arts & Sciences, School of New Resources, and the Graduate School were recognized for continuing to serve in the tradition of the Ursuline ministries.

Geraldine Ondrizek, an Associate Professor of Art at Reed College,  delivered a lecture  in Romite Auditorium on Wednesday, October 19,  2005 . Her installation piece  “Repairing RNA” is based on an embroidery loom used since the 17th century in South East Asia. The work (r.) is on view at the Mooney Center Gallery from October 1 through October 26, 2005.

The semester’s first Commuter Coffee House was held on Tuesday, October 4th in the Mooney Center Lounge on the main campus. The Commuter Coffee House is a Student Development & Programs sponsored event that offers a continental breakfast and relaxing environment to students who do not reside on campus. The Coffee House breakfasts are an opportunity for commuting students to meet other commuter students.

On September 28, 2005, The College of New Rochelle hosted Sleep Out 2005. Under the guidance of Dr. Faith Kostel-Hughes, Associate Professor of Biology at CNR (l.), members of the School of Arts & Sciences Environmental Biology class had a chance to learn about and experience the Long Island Sound in a more direct way -- by kayaking.


The students learned about the Long Island Sound’s natural history and developed a greater sense of connection to this major habitat so close to campus.

This exhibition, which runs from September 11 through November 13, 2005, spotlights the work of 13 artists who use reading (text or text- based), writing (language and words), and arithmetic (numbers and systems) as their medium for art making. R³ takes a fresh look at how, thirty years later, contemporary artists continue to use the "3 Rs" in their paintings, sculpture, mixed media, and book-based art.   m o r e

Dr. James Schleifer led a discussion with the students and faculty of CNR on Constitution Day, Monday, September 19, 2005. Dr. Schleifer, Dean of Gill Library, is a noted scholar on Alexis de Tocqueville, and spoke on how this French statesman, traveler, historian saw our constitution. The discussion was held at noon in the Gill Library Café.

On Friday evening, September 16, 2005, the College Community came together for their annual Opening of School Year Meeting. President Sweeny, along with the Vice Presidents and Dea
ns, gave up-to-date progress reports of each school/area and introduced new members to the College Community.


Immediately following the meeting, a dinner was held to honor faculty and staff celebrating service anniversaries and share a meal at the beginning of the fall semester.


President Sweeny is joined by Dr. James Schleifer, Dean of Gill Library, and Sr. Mary Virginia Orna, Professor of Chemistry, School of Arts & Sciences, both celebrating 35 years of dedicated service to The College of New Rochelle.

During the week of August 22, new firefighters assigned to the New Rochelle Fire Department’s five stations have been in training at The College of New Rochelle’s Main Campus. The firefighters have been running drills and exercises with experienced colleagues on several buildings that will be taken down to make way for the College’s $25 million Wellness Center that will be built and running by 2007.
