LECTURE ON THE BLACK MADONNA BY ELAINE SOTO, Ph.D.

This lecture will cover the history of the Black Madonna, and
explore the relationship between Black Madonnas and psychological
therapy. This presentation is strongly recommended for students
and teachers of art, philosophy and religion, psychology, and art
therapy, as well as those with a special interest in iconography and
religious imagery.

A clinical psychologist and painter, Elaine Soto is uniquely qualified to speak on the Black Madonna.

Dr. Soto, who has been researching and painting this subject since 1990, has participated in several lectures, publications, seminars,
and exhibitions relating to the Black Madonna and art therapy.

Dr. Soto, who is of Puerto Rican descent, has worked as an
artist-in-residence at both Taller Boriqua in Spanish Harlem and
El Museo del Barrio. Dr. Soto views her paintings as “healing rather
than religious images, and sees her role as an artist in parallel with
her work as a psychologist in the community.”  She received
graduate degrees from Harvard and New York University.
