Elvira Longordo, Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Dr. Elvira Longordo received her B.S. at the College of New Rochelle and her M.S. and Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Chemistry with a specialization in Analytical Chemistry.  Her doctoral and post-doctoral research was on "The extraction of Usable Fuels from Coal by Vacuum Processing".  After a year as a post-doctoral associate at RPI, Dr. Longordo returned to CNR for a one year sabbatical replacement for Dr. Tom Venanzi.  Since then, Dr. Longordo has been working as an industrial analytical chemist with the American Cyanamid Company and Cytec Industries Inc.   Working in industry, Dr. Longordo has developed and implemented chromatographic and spectroscopic analytical methods at locations worldwide in the Americas and Europe.  She is also proficient in the use of statistical and chemometric analysis of data.  She has authored, co-authored or contributed to more than 55 company confidential reports involving implemented methods or documenting scientific investigations in the areas of coatings technology, polymer additives, water soluble polymers, specialty adhesives, surfactants, chemicals used in the mining and the paper making industries as well as analytical investigations or methods for analysis of pharmaceutical compounds.  She has also published in the Journal of Liquid Chromatography, the Journal of Coatings Technology and Progress in Organic Coatings and presented at the International Forum for Process Analytical Technology.  Dr. Longordo teaches courses in Analytical and Physical Chemistry.  Her other interests outside of chemistry include studies of world religions, and traditional healing methodologies of the American Indian, Oriental, Indian and Western European cultures.  She is also a certified Reiki Master.
