Where are
you from, Alka?
I was born in India and spent my early years there, but after
elementary
school my family moved to New Rochelle. Besides my parents, who live in
New
Rochelle, I have an older sister who attends the Albany College of
Pharmacy.
You are
studying nursing?
Yes, I
want to be a nurse because I want to make a difference in my community.
The feelings and emotions I get from helping others are beyond
description.
I have volunteered at local hospitals during my summers for several
years
and when I see the struggles people undergo, I just want to reach out
and
help them.
Do you
also work besides attending college and doing your volunteering?
I have a part-time job at the New Rochelle Library. It is a perfect job
for me because I love to read. Right now I’m reading The Stranger by
Albert
Camus. He’s a wonderful writer.
Why did
you decide to come to CNR?
Living here in New Rochelle I had, naturally, heard about the College.
I
knew, too, that they had a wonderful nursing program. To tell you the
truth,
I feel very honored to be a student at CNR, and to be part of this
nursing
community.
You’re a
commuter student, right?
Yes, and it has been fun. I come to classes, of course, but I also
spend
a lot of time in the computer lab and working out in The Wellness
Center.
Because it is a small campus, I can get anywhere I want to be within
minutes.
Are you
involved in any activities on campus?
In my first semester, I was part of the Drama Club. I’m not doing
anything
special this semester, but in the future I want to be involved in the
nursing
association for students.
Are you
playing sports?
I played Lacrosse and ran track at New Rochelle High, now I just enjoy
biking
and playing badminton and softball with my friends.
What do
you like best about CNR?
Two
aspects of the school make this college perfect for me. One, I love the
small class sizes and, two, I appreciate the very supportive
professors.
My teachers are always there to help me stay focused on my studies, and
I
know they care about me, and the want me to be the best I can do. I
feel
that here at CNR, I can reach my full academic potential, and be a good
nurse.
And that is want I want to be.
