CNR GOES WIRELESS:  Technological Upgrades
Pave the Way to Success for Students, Faculty and Staff

NEW ROCHELLE, NY, December 5, 2002 – The College of New Rochelle is pleased to announce wireless capability for laptop computers for students, faculty, and staff at its main campus in New Rochelle.  All members of the CNR family will now be able to use a wireless Ethernet card to connect to the Internet from Gill Library, Mooney Center, Chidwick Hall, and the Student Campus Center.  Students and faculty can browse the internet, check email, perform research or update online course materials from a variety of locations.  It’s one of many new pilot programs that CNR is using to further the integration of technology into teaching and learning.

“As technology becomes a more integral part of our lives, colleges must work hard to ensure that they enhance students’ education as much as possible,” says Ellen Curry Damato, Executive Vice President at CNR.  “To us, that means providing the tools that will help facilitate life-long learning and access to the latest technology.  Our decision to go wireless will help ensure that CNR students as well as faculty and staff, continue to reap the benefits of technology.”

The wireless capability is expected to offer classroom instructors an enormous amount of flexibility. They will no longer be limited by location restrictions. The wireless network supplements CNR’s more traditional Ethernet connections.

“Having this wireless capability is great,” says Ms. Denise Tejada, a sophomore in the School of Nursing at The College of New Rochelle.  “Like most students today, I am always on the go – on and off campus.  Being able to connect no matter where we are makes learning a lot more accessible than ever before for me and my classmates.”

Adds Dr. Curry Damato, “Our long-term goal at CNR is to continue infrastructure improvements at our seven campuses, provide wireless access at all campuses, and integrate the use of technology in curriculum, regardless of the subject matter.”

Wireless capability is the latest in CNR’s ongoing efforts to make technology more accessible for students, faculty and staff.  Previous improvements include:

  • Public access computers strategically placed in high traffic areas such as Gill Library, Mooney Center, and the Student Campus Center;
  • A multi-million dollar renovation of Gill Library that offers: over 200 data ports for easy access to online databases and the Internet, as well as a computerized Bibliographic Instruction Room to enhance student research efforts;
  • State-of-the-art Mac laboratory;
  • High speed data network available to resident students that connects all seven campuses; and
  • Significant student discounts on specific DELL laptop and desktop computers and a laptop purchase program just for CNR faculty and staff.
