NEW ROCHELLE, NY, November 18, 2003 – The College of New Rochelle’s (CNR) Castle Gallery will once again host “Return of the Crèche: Nativity Scenes from Around the World” from December 7, 2003 through March 3, 2004.  The exhibition features more than 100 examples of crèches made from Budapest and Indonesia to Burkino Faso (Africa) and Peru.  The collection, compiled by alumna Eileen Canty and her husband, Jim, from their world travels over the past two decades, spotlights crèches made with both familiar and unconventional materials such as loufah sponge and potato flour dough.

CNR will host an opening reception and holiday party for “Return of the Crèche” on Sunday, December 7, 2003, 2 – 4 p.m.  That day, a gallery talk by Eileen Canty is slated for 3 p.m. with music provided by Garald Lee Farnham.  This exhibit is appropriate for children of all ages.  The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

Gallery hours are as follows:
  • Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 12 – 4 p.m.
  • Closed Mondays and Dec. 24, 2003 – Jan. 2, 2004

The nativity scenes in this exhibition are part of a much larger gift of crèches that the Cantys donated this year to form the beginning of The College of New Rochelle's Kate Canty Crèche Collection,” named after their daughter.
