NEW ROCHELLE, NY, April 14, 2003 – For a day of fun-filled outdoor activities appropriate for families of all ages, Westchester residents can turn to the 31st Annual Strawberry Festival, i.e., “Spirit Jam” at The College of New Rochelle (CNR).  This year’s event, planned entirely by CNR students, is taking place on Sunday, May 4, from 12 noon – 5 p.m. on Maura Lawn on the College’s main campus in New Rochelle (29 Castle Place).  (Rain location will be CNR’s Student Campus Center.)  Entrance to the event is free but there will be some cost for refreshments and activities.  Off-street parking is available.  For further information, please call (914) 654-5326.

Spirit Jam will be an exciting day for families, students, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i and will include face painting, Rockem Sockem jousting, a moon bounce house, a balloon slide, a carousel, vendors, and more.  Refreshments for sale will include chocolate-covered strawberries, strawberry smoothies, strawberry shortcake with ice cream, as well as hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, popcorn, and more.  Local radio stations KTU and WPLJ will broadcast live for a portion of the event.

The Strawberry Festival, which was introduced to CNR in 1973, is the single largest event organized entirely by the College’s undergraduates. The concept of the Strawberry Festival originated in the mid-west during the 1890’s as an American festival celebrating the ripening of strawberries, the blooming of lilacs, and the coming of summer.
