Dr.  James T. Schleifer began his career at The College of New Rochelle as a History Professor,  served as Chairperson of that department, and is now Dean of the newly-renovated Mother Irene Gill Library.

He has taught as visiting professor at Yale University and at the University of Paris as well as lectured widely at conferences, university colloquia, and international symposia. He is one of only three American members of the French National Commission for the Publication of theComplete Works of Alexis de Tocqueville, an international body of scholars appointed by the French government.  Dr. Schleifer is the author of The Making of Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, for which he received the Merle Curti Award, given by the Organization of American Historians, 1981, for the best book in the field of American intellectual history.  He is co-author of a critical edition, in French, of Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, and contributor to a half-dozen other books on Tocqueville. He has also published numerous articles and reviews in historical journals.

After writing The College of New Rochelle: An Extraordinary Story to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the founding of the College, Dr. Schleifer continued his research and will publish a more in-depth scholarly history to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the College.  We are very proud to feature this distinguished faculty member who contributes so generously to the College community.
