previous
games: Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, and Salt Lake 2002. This
summer,
Dr. Bass will be sending CNR her impressions of the Games for

on a special "CNR at the Olympics" section of the CNR Website at www.cnr.edu.
Her
book, Not
the Triumph but the Struggle: the 1968 Olympic Games and the Making of
the
Black Athlete, focuses
on the Mexico City Olympics, when track-and-field
medalists Tommie
Smith and John Carlos defied the system by raising black-gloved fists
at the
flag as the “Star-Spangled Banner” was being played. Dr. Bass examines
that
protest, spotlighting the history of black athletes and media coverage
of
athletic events.
