Focus The Nation Symposia Held at CNR

On
January 30, 31, and February 1, 2008, The College of New Rochelle
participated in Focus The
Nation (FTN), an unprecedented national simultaneous educational
symposia on global warming solutions for America. FTN’s goal was to
create a dialogue and promote civic engagement with local, state and
federal political leaders nationwide on environmental issues.

CNR Gospel Choir Performs at St. Patrick's
Cathedral

On February 3, 2008, The College of New Rochelle Gospel Choir took
part in the celebration of Black History Month sponsored by the Office
of Black Ministry of the Archdiocese of New York at St. Patrick’s
Cathedral. Choir members wore special tunics made from materials
imported from Ghana and ordered especially for the Mass. CNR’s choir
was part of a larger choir formed from churches and schools throughout
the Archdiocese to lead music for the celebration Mass during this, the
200th anniversary of the Archdiocese.
Wellness Center Nears Completion
The Wellness Center is entering
the final stage of construction—finishing of all remaining construction
activities and preparing the building for occupancy. m o r

CNR Launches Professional Women’s
Networking Group

Ernst and Young was the site of a gathering of the newly launched CNR
Professional Women’s Networking Group on January 29, 2008. Hosted
by Betsy
Donovan SAS’79 (r.) and Pat Wiley SAS’72 (l.), this group was treated
to a presentation on Women and Wellness by Dean Mary Alice Donius
(second from r.)
of the School of Nursing. Marlene Tutera (second from l.),
president of the Alumnae/i Association welcomed the group and Christine
LaSala SAS’72, vice chair of the Board of Trustees brought everyone up
to date on the College’s new Wellness Center. The breakfast was
the first in what will be an ongoing series of events, providing CNR
professional women in the NYC area with the opportunity to network and
connect around common and relatable issues so that they can grow as
leaders in their businesses and communities.

Dr. Walter Sullivan,
Associate Professor of Educational Leadership in
the Graduate School and Director of the Center For Educational Policy
and Practice at CNR, has been appointed by The New York State
Board of
Regents as the Coordinator of the NYS Regents Committee for the
revision of the New York State Learning Standards and Assessments. This
revision will be approximately a three-year process starting with the
revision of K-12 Language Arts including English.
Dr. Amy Bass,
Associate Professor of History and Honors Program
Director in the School of Arts & Sciences, was honored to have her
first book as Sporting Series Editor with Temple University Press, Silent Gesture: The
Autobiography of Tommie Smith, nominated for an
NAACP Image Award. Dr. Bass also had her review of Judaism’s
Encounter
with American Sports by Jeffrey S. Gurock published in The American
Historical Review and a review of The Greatest Fight of Our Generation
by Lewis Erenberg published in The
Journal of American Studies.
Andrea DeCapua,
Assistant Professor of Multilingual/Multicultural
Education in the Graduate School, has authored her second book, Grammar
for Teachers: A Guide to American English for Native and
Non-Native
Speakers. The book, published by Springer Press, is due to be
released
in early February.
Dr. Robert Wolf,
Professor, Graduate Art and Art Therapy programs in
the Graduate School, is exhibiting three of his contemporary stone
sculptures in New York galleries. “Rooster” (grey carrera marble) will
be featured in the 2008 International Art Exhibition at the HUN Gallery
in Manhattan. “Dancer” (white carrera marble) and “Harmony”
(white
translucent alabaster) will be featured in The Art of Art Therapists
exhibition at The Pratt Institute Schafler Gallery in Brooklyn.
Cristina de Gennaro,
Associate Professor of Art in the School of Arts
& Sciences, created a site-specific installation, “Janus Doorway,”
for the exhibition Ornamental
Instincts, which ran for several months
at Wave Hill House in Wave Hill in the Bronx.
Adrienne Wald,
Director of Wellness Education and Programs, testified
in two hearings on health legislation, one of which led to a ban on the
use of artificial trans fats by food establishments operating in
Westchester County. Adrienne was also quoted in two Journal News
articles on the hearings: “Hearing over a trans-fats ban pits health
advocates against restaurants” (November 16, 2007) and “Nutritionists,
restaurant owners weigh in on proposed calorie count law” (November 27,
2007).
