On May 27, the College’s record-setting Class of 2004 -- more than
1,600 strong -- were the star performers at Radio City Music Hall
during this year’s Centennial Commencement.

Pre-eminent
Feminist Theologian at CNR
Elizabeth
A.
Johnson, CSJ, Distinguished Professor of Theology, Fordham
University, addressed the question “For the Second Century, Why
Catholic?” at the final Centennial Academic Convocation held on June 5
during the Centennial Alumnae/i College
Weekend. An overflowing crowd of alumnae/i, faculty, and friends filled
a large tent on Maura Lawn to hear Professor Johnson, who is regarded
as America’s pre-eminent feminist theologian. Following the
Convocation, President Sweeny conferred an honorary degree on Sister
Elizabeth and awarded her the special Centennial Medal.

Coburn Memorial Home
Gift
On July 28, at an afternoon reception held in Leland Castle on the Main
Campus, the Board of Trustees of the Colburn Memorial Home, a former
senior citizen residence in New Rochelle, donated the entire proceeds
from the sale of its Clinton Avenue property to nine area
not-for-profit organizations, including The College of New Rochelle.
College Honored
for Outstanding Commitment
to
Community
On June 9, the College was honored by the New Rochelle Council of
Community Services for outstanding commitment to the New Rochelle
community during its annual luncheon at the Davenport Club in New
Rochelle.
President Stephen J. Sweeny accepted the award on
behalf of
the College. The NRCCS is comprised of health and human service
agencies, religious institutions, educational facilities and other
not-for-profit organizations united to improve and coordinate the
delivery of services to all members of the community. Karen Farber
GS’86, Co-President of the Council, presented the award to President
Sweeny, saying that The College of New Rochelle had “changed her life.”

Boys & Girls Clubs and Yolanda Davis of HOPE Community Services.
CNR Athletic Awards
The 2003-2004 Athletic Awards Banquet was held on Friday, May 14, at
Juliano’s Restaurant in downtown New Rochelle. Dr. Amy Bass, Associate
Professor of History and Director of the Honors Program and author of Not the Triumph but
the Struggle: the 1968 Olympic Games and the Making
of the Black Athlete spoke to the student athletes on
“Women in
Sports Today.”

CNR At The Olympics
From August 13 - 29, Dr. Amy Bass, Associate Professor of History
and
Director of the Honors Program in The College of New Rochelle’s School
of Arts and Sciences, is attending the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens,
Greece. Dr. Bass is the Research Room Supervisor at the Games,
working
for
the NBC network. She oversees researchers who act as the central
information network for the broadcast of the Games on NBC. Dr. Bass is
sending CNR emails of interesting news from the Olympics,

Health Services
Gives Keynote Address
Marie Serina, RN-C, MA, FNP-CS, Director of
College Health Services
at the College, gave the keynote address at the May 12 National Nursing
Week commemoration at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the
Bronx,
NY. This event, sponsored by the New York City Health and
Hospitals
Corporation, focused on this year’s American Nurses Association theme,
“Nurses: Your Voice, Your Health, Your Life.”
Marie was joined by Natasha Ramgahan, RN, Gail
Wilson, RN, and
Hope Holmes-Gay, RN, three students who are pursuing their
baccalaureate degrees at the College’s School of Nursing.

66th
Annual Alumnae College Reunion Weekend was held
on June 4, 5, and 6,
2004.
They
dined, danced,
were intellectually stimulated, received awards, posed for photos, and
renewed friendships forged during their years at The College of New
Rochelle. They were the alumnae/i of the Classes ending in 4s and 9s,
and the place was the 66th Annual Alumnae/i College, held in early June.

New Rochelle
During
the College’s 66th
Annual Alumnae/i College Weekend in early June, four sisters -- all
graduates of the School of Arts & Sciences at CNR -- announced that
they will be naming a seating area in Gill Library in honor of their
mother,
Kathryn (Kaye) Shanley Vavasour SAS ’44, who was attending her 60-year
reunion.

Castle Gallery to
Spotlight the Talents
of Alumnae/i Artists
To mark the culmination of its Centennial year celebration, CNR’s
Castle Gallery will launch a juried multi-media art exhibition, Once
Upon A Time: Visions by Alumnae/i Artists, spotlighting the work of 49
CNR alumnae artists. The exhibit, which will be on display from
September 5 through November 14, will include crafts, installation,
mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture, video, and works on
paper.
The artwork was selected by a
panel of jurors which included
Jennifer McGregor, the Visual Arts Curator of Wave Hill in the Bronx,
Simone Dewey, the owner and founder of Simone's Gallery Ltd. of Pelham,
and Katherine Gass, the President and founder of James Company
Contemporary Art Projects LLC, a curatorial and art consultancy
organization.
More than half of the
participating artists reside in
Westchester County, with the balance of artists hailing from New York
City and Long Island and New Jersey, Connecticut, among several other
states. An opening reception will take place on September 12 from 2 - 4
p.m. This reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.
Castle Gallery is located on the Main Campus in
New Rochelle and is
open Tuesday to Friday, 10 am - 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday, 12 -
4 pm. It is closed Mondays and major national holidays.

New Con Edison
Access Center
at Rosa Parks Campus
A $100,000 grant from Consolidated Edison, Inc. to upgrade the School
of New Resources Access Center at the Rosa Parks Campus with new
equipment and software, as well as ongoing maintenance and training for
faculty and students, was recognized by the College with the renaming
of the Access Center as the Con Edison Access Center. This Center is
available to approximately 600 students who are enrolled at SNR’s
Harlem Campus. Dr. Joan Freilich, Executive Vice President and Chief
Financial Officer of Con Ed, and the Vice Chair of CNR’s Board of
Trustees, spoke at the official naming of the Con Edison Access Center.

Ursuline High
School
Students at CNR
This June, three dozen female high school students from Ursuline
Schools in Wilmington, Delaware; Mt. St. Ursula in Bronx, New York;
Ursuline Academy of Dallas, Texas; and the Ursuline Academy in St.
Louis, Missouri, spent a week of service at non-profit organizations in
Greater New York while using CNR as their "home base." This is the
second summer that
the College has been honored to host these Ursuline high school
students on campus. The students are all participants in a special
Ursuline Schools Unite in Service program. This year, the young women
delivered food they prepared and clothes they collected to the homeless
in
Manhattan, worked in gardens, and did office work in White Plains, all
part of the Ursuline schools emphasis on service to the community.

Remembers
Sr. Estelle Ghidoni
It was with great sadness that President Sweeny informed the College
Community of the passing of Sr. Estelle Ghidoni, OSU ’32 on June 26 at
the Marian Residence in New Rochelle. Sr. Estelle, who was also
known
as Mother Bonaventure, was 93 years old at the time of her death. A
beloved faculty member, she began teaching in the College’s Biology
Department in 1944 and remained there until her retirement in
1976. In the years following her retirement from CNR, Sr. Estelle
taught Environmental Botany at the New York Botanical Gardens, worked
in ambulatory care at New Rochelle Medical Center (now Sound Shore
Medical Center), and served as a Eucharistic Minister at the Bayberry
Nursing Home in New Rochelle.
