At the President’s Circle Dinner held  on September 28, 2006, President Sweeny expressed gratitude to those gathered for their support of the College. He also reported on the progress of the Capital Campaign and the construction  of the new Wellness Center.

The CNR Community Celebrates Opening of New Academic Year


On September 11, 2006 the CNR Community celebrated the opening of the new academic year and remembered those who had lost their lives in 9/11 at a special midday Mass in Holy Family Chapel.

President Stephen Sweeny received two awards in September, the Pierre Toussaint Medallion from the Archdiocese of New York Office of Black Ministry and the 2006 Diversity Achievement and Mosaic Award from American Advertising Federation.   m o r e

CNR’s fundraising efforts to assist the rebuilding at Xavier University in New Orleans resulted in $45,000 in donations from 500 members of the CNR Community.

Faculty & Staff Honored for CNR Careers at Opening of School Dinner
On September 15, 2006, the College Community came together for their annual Opening of School Year Meeting & Dinner during which faculty and staff celebrating service anniversaries were recognized. Constitution Day Held on Main Campus
In recognition of Constitution Day, a special seminar was held on September 18, 2006.  Over 75 students, faculty, and staff attended this presentation held in the café lounge of the Gill Library on the main campus of CNR.


C N R  S T U D E N T  N E W S

CNR Choir performs at Fordham University

The CNR Gospel Choir was one of twelve gospel ensembles performing at Fordham University on September 24, 2006. Fordham’s Campus Ministry Office sponsored this ecumenical prayer service called “Psalms in the Night.”


F A C U L T Y / S T A F F  F O C U S

Dr. Joan Arnold, Professor of Nursing in the School of Nursing, recently co-edited the book Health Promotion in Practice with Sherri Sheinfeld Gorin for Jossey-Bass Publishers.


Dr. Linda Swerdlow, Associate Professor of Education in the School of Arts & Sciences, has been awarded a grant from the organization Teaching Tolerance. This grant will support Dr. Swerdlow's collaboration with Isaac E. Young Middle School on a project on Global Child Labor.


Heather Herrera, a member of the Instructional Staff of Letters of the School of New Resources at Co-Op City, will present her paper "Promoting High School Student Achievement through Mentoring and Partnerships" at the New Educator's conference "Building and Sustaining Learning Communities in Challenging Times" on October 21, 2006, at The City College of New York.


Dr. Nick Smart, Associate Professor of English and Chair of the English Department in the School of Arts & Sciences, visited the University of Missouri St. Louis’s International Studies Program on September 22, 2006, and delivered the address “Helen of Utah: The truth of fiction in the life and writing of Helen Papanikolas." Mrs. Papanikolas was Dr. Smart’s grandmother. Dr. Smart is co-executor of her literary estate and co-editor of her posthumously published novel Rain in the Valley, which won the Utah Book Award for fiction, 2005. Dr. Smart also read from the novel at The King’s English Bookstore in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 19, 2006.


I N  M E M O R I A M

Dr. Elsa Kissel, one of the first faculty members to be recruited for the School of Nursing, passed away recently. In addition to her role as an associate professor, during her six years at the College, she also served as interim Dean of the School of Nursing.

Rita Paolucci died on September 20, 2006.  Rita joined The College of New Rochelle in 1985 as Payroll Coordinator.  Since her retirement in 1998, she has made her home in Deerfield Beach, Florida.  She held degrees from the School of New Resources and the Graduate School.


A L U M N A E / I  N E W S

Mariya Rivera SAS ‘82, who majored in art history at CNR, recently opened an art studio at the NEST Arts Factory in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Her first show at the NEST was entitled, “Women of Spirit, transcribing our inner vision via color & canvas."


Dr. Kathy Reilly Fallon SAS ’90  Co-Founder and Chairwoman of the Heavenly Productions Foundation, has released "Heavenly Skies & Lullabies~Illustrated Song Book & CD" dedicated to "Children Throughout The World".  All net proceeds from the first publication run will be donated to World Vision-specifically to Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.  This is the second project to help children in need.
