CNR Announces 2006 Honorary Degree Recipients


Dr. Norman C. Francis

Dr. Norman C. Francis, President of Xavier University of Louisiana, will be the Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree recipient at the 99th Commencement exercises of The College of New Rochelle to be held on May 25 at Radio City Music Hall. Also receiving Honorary Degrees from CNR will be Thomas E. Hales, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Union State Bank Financial Center, and Linda E. Kelly, Superintendent of Schools, City School District of New Rochelle.

Dowell Lecture Features Film Producer/Director

As part of CNR's Women's History Month programming, the 2006 Dowell Lecture was given by producer/director Maryann T. Manelski. After her remarks,"Does My Feminism Go With These Shoes? Women, Power and Politics," there was a screening of her documentary on women and politics entitled, Running in High Heels.    m o r e


CNR Drama Marks Centennial Year Season with Two Plays


CNR Drama, the student run drama group at The College of New Rochelle,  presented two American plays in repertory from March 30 through April 8. Oleanna by David Mamet’s and Vanities by Jack Heifner.   m o r e

CNR Remembers Gordon Parks

It is with great sorrow that The College of New Rochelle acknowledges the death of Gordon Parks.  He was an extraordinarily talented individual who achieved many milestones in his career.  His unprecedented work as a photojournalist, filmmaker, author, and composer chronicled the Black experience in the United States and helped set industry standards for artistic expression.

“Multiple Intelligences: Integrating Howard Garner’s Theory in the Language Classroom” workshop for foreign language educators was presented by Dr. André Beauzethier on Saturday, March 25. Dr. Beauzethier is Chair of the Modern and Classical Languages Department of the School of Arts & Sciences. Language teachers and language students from seven institutions attended the workshops.


The School of New Resources and the Education Fund of District Council 37 co-hosted a lecture and book signing of From Brotherhood to Manhood by Dr. A. J. Franklin on March 29. Dr. Franklin is a former professor of the School of New Recourses and his mother was one of the first graduates of SNR’s New Rochelle Campus.

SNR Students Celebrate Women’s History Month
Students from the School of New Resources celebrated Women’s History Month with Iron Jawed Angels, a film about women’s struggle to get the vote, on March 22 in the Angela Hall Living Room.


“Madam President” Panel

On March 27, 2006 a panel discussion entitled “Madam President?” was held in Maura Ballroom on CNR’s Main Campus. The discussion focused on the possibility of a female president in the United States and a look at female leaders around the world. Panelists included, (background l. - r.) Dr. Daniel McCarthy, Associate Professor of Political Science; Dr. Roblyn Rawlins, Assistant Professor of Sociology; and Dr. Amy Bass, Assistant Professor of History. Posing with the faculty members were (foreground l. - r.)  student organizer Kathryn Tyranski SAS ’06 and Terri Eberle Boyle, Director of Government Relations for The College of New Rochelle, who moderated the discussion.


SAS Students Celebrate International Women’s Day

On March 8, in celebration of International Women’s Day, students enrolled in Dr. Judith Gordon's course “Global Perspectives on Women’s Rights” acted out roles in a Mock Women’s Human Rights Tribunal.

Cristina de Gennaro, Associate Professor of Art in the School of Arts & Sciences, has created a new site-specific installation entitled “Memento (If These Walls Could Talk)” for the Wave Hill Glyndor Gallery's spring exhibition, Survive/Thrive/Alive.  The exhibition is open from March 4 through May 29. The reception for the artists will be on Sunday, April 23 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. More information can be found at www.wavehill.org/arts . 

Michael Grabowski, Assistant Professor, Department of Communication Arts in the School of Arts & Sciences, is serving as the Media Ecology Association Program Planner for the 2006 Eastern Communication Association Convention, to be held in Philadelphia April 25-30. Grabowski has organized six panels of papers around the theme "Transforming Communication and Community," bringing together scholars from as far away as Switzerland and as close as Iona.

SAS ’70 graduate Vice Admiral Patricia Tracey, USN (Ret.), Chief of Staff, Quadrennial Defense Review Authorities Team, gave the keynote address at the New Learning Technologies Conference in Orlando, Florida on February 8, 2006. Admiral Tracey retired in 2004 as the highest senior woman officer in the history of the U.S. Navy after a distinguished 34-year career.

Lisa Hazell, SNR ’04, took part in HOPE 2006, New York City’s fourth annual homeless street count. Ms. Hazell volunteered to count the number of unsheltered individuals living on New York City’s streets, in subways, parks, and other public spaces. Assigned to a team in the Morrissania area of the Bronx, she was in charge of the maps and guiding her group through the snow on the night of February 27. Ms. Hazell is the CEO of the Hazell Global Communications Corporation.

Katie Gohdé-Haase, SAS ’84, is one of the artists in the Westchester Biennial fifth juried all-media art exhibition featuring innovative works by Westchester Country artists, on exhibit through April 2-June 18, 2006 in the Castle Gallery of CNR. Her work in the show features middle aged or older women wearing bridal dresses in "non-wedding" situations. The work was informed by interviews with the subjects. Gohdé-Haase has exhibited locally since 1983 and has received over 30 awards for her writing, producing and directing.

Grace Powers Fraioli, SAS ’77 and GS ’89, Adjunct faculty in the School of Arts & Sciences and a graduate of CNR, is one of the artists in the Westchester Biennial 2006, the Castle Gallery's fifth juried all-media art exhibition featuring innovative works by Westchester Country artists.  Her totem artwork symbolically tells the story of her own family while touching on a universal notion of meaningful relationships.  Able to be separated or stacked, “[t]he spiral movement in the piece continues upward in the direction of our universe and the relationship of time.”  A visual arts teacher for New Rochelle High School and adjunct instructor for The College of New Rochelle, Powers Fraioli has exhibited throughout New York, Arizona. and Norway.

Annette Swackhamer, who has a Masters Degree from the School of Nursing, received the 2006 Nurses’ Network of America Nursing Leadership Award for her leadership “in the many possibilities of the profession of nursing and as a leader in the practice of humanity.”
