Artist Emma Amos at CNR
Painter, printmaker, curator, professor and writer Emma Amos gave the Visiting Artist Lecture in CNR's Romita Auditorium on Wednesday, February 15, 2006. Ms. Amos spoke about her experiences as an African-American woman artist and the way gender and race has factored in the history of art and in the representation of women. A reception immediately followed the lecture where faculty and students had a chance to meet Emma Amos and discuss her work. Above: (l.-r.)  “Political Fridays” at CNR

CNR hosted the Westchester County Association's "Political Fridays" Program on Friday, February 24, 2006,  on its Main Campus. Business leaders from the Westchester community gathered to hear the new Mayor of New Rochelle, Noam Bramson, speak about the urban challenges facing New Rochelle,  and his plans to work with business and civic leaders to enhance the City's development and quality of life.  m o r e


Dr. Donius Appointed New Dean of Nursing School
President Sweeny announced on February 27 that Dr. Mary Alice (Mimi) Higgins Donius has been appointed as the next Dean of the School of Nursing at CNR.  Currently Dr. Donius is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing with Faculty Practice at Sound Shore Medical Center and Coordinator of the College’s Master’s program in Nursing. In naming Dr. Donius, Dr. Sweeny said members of the Search Committee and other members of the College community, including the Vice Presidents and Deans, cited, “Dr. Donius’ passion for the mission of CNR and her particular resonance with our Ursuline heritage in their recommendations.” Dr. Donius will assume her new position on July 1, 2006, succeeding Dr. Donna Demarest who announced her retirement last fall.

CNR’s Gospel Choir performs at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

The Black History Month Celebration at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on February 5, 2006, featured choirs from parishes throughout the city. The CNR choir, under the direction of Helen Wolf, Campus Ministry Director, performed together and as soloists.


A Night in "Mexico"

School of Arts & Sciences students who will be spending eight days in Oaxaca, Mexico in late May as the culmination of their course "Bridging Cultures: Mexico," met with guest curator Reyna Henaine for a tour of the current exhibition of Presence of Mexico: Mexican Masters and Contemporary Artists in the Castle Galley.  m o r e

CNR Announces Grant for UNIFEM Student Chapter
The School of Arts & Sciences last month received a $2,000 grant from the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs. The grant supports six interns from CNR, members of the Student Chapter of UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women.) The students will spend time this semester working with non-governmental organizations in New York City.   m o r e


CNR Students Lobby in Albany

Students from The College of New Rochelle’s School of Nursing (SN) and School of New Resources (SNR) were among 700 students in Albany at the Council for Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu)-sponsored Lobby Day on February 14. The students met with various state legislators to discuss issues such as funding for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) that affect their pursuit of a college degree.  m o r e

For 25 years the Art Department in the School of Arts & Sciences has purchased outstanding work by graduating seniors. For the first time selected pieces from this permanent collection of CNR will be on exhibition at Mooney Center Gallery  m o r e

Dr. Norman Loftis, Instructional Staff and Chair of the Communications Department at the School of New Resources Brooklyn Campus, wrote the introduction to the new Barnes & Noble Classics edition of Women in Love by D.H. Lawrence. Dr. Loftis will discuss this novel on March 15 at the School of New Resources annual Book Talk event, held on the Brooklyn Campus at Restoration Plaza in Bedford Stuyvesant. The lecture begins at 6 p.m. 


In January, 2006, an article by Dr. Frank Rizza, Assistant Professor of Career Counseling in the Graduate School, on “Substance Use Disorders and Self Worth,” was published in the winter issue of the New York Mental Health Counselors’ Association Newsletter.


Dr. Ronald D. Valenti, Blind Brook’s Superintendent of Schools and Acting Director of the Education Division in the Graduate School, was selected by the Distinguished Service Committee of the New York State Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS) to receive an Appreciation Award at their statewide January Conference.  


Dr. Judith Gordon, Associate Professor of Social Work in the School of Arts & Sciences, has been selected to receive the 2006 Social Worker of the Year Award from the National Association of Social Workers Westchester Division for her outstanding achievements on behalf of students and the profession of Social Work. The Award Dinner is being held on March 30, 2006 at the Davenport Club in New Rochelle. This dinner in March coincides with Social Work Month.


Dr. Nick Smart, Associate Professor of English in the School of Arts & Sciences, is  co-editor of the novel Rain in the Valley, by Helen Papanikolas (Utah State University Press, 2005). Mrs. Papanikolas, who died in October 2004, was a celebrated Greek American author and Dr. Smart's grandmother. In October of 2005, while on sabbatical, Dr. Smart read from the novel at San Francisco State University where the Modern Greek Studies Department held a memorial for Mrs. Papanikolas.


Robert Wolf, Professor of Art in the Graduate School, is currently the Visiting Professor at the Pratt Institute Graduate Art Therapy Program teaching “Innovations in Phototherapy.” He will soon begin teaching a course on “Creative Processing of Countertransference” for the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, the Psychoanalytic Training Institute in New York City. Very recently New York State began issuing licensing to Psychoanalysts, and Professor Wolf is the 75th psychoanalyst to receive a license from New York State.


Dr. Kristin Berman, Assistant Professor of Education in the Graduate School, spent one week in January as Artist-in-Residence at a K-8 school in Phoenix, Arizona instructing students and teachers in the art of Shadow Theatre.  She also attended the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) conference in San Diego representing the Graduate School.  


Dr. Joan Arnold, Professor of Nursing in the School of Nursing, recently co-authored the article “Exploring Parental Grief: Combining Quantitative and Qualitative Measures” in the December, 2005 issue of Archives of Psychiatric Nursing.


Dr. Ann Raia, Associate Professor of Classics in the School of Arts & Sciences, was recently elected Second VP to the Classical Association of the Atlantic States. Dr. Raia was also invited to be a presider of a panel on teaching intermediate Latin with texts on women at the Classical Association of the Atlantic States meeting next October.


In Memoriam:

Sr. Margaret Crowley, OSU, died on January 26 at 104 years of age. Sr. Margaret joined the College’s English department faculty in 1929. Later she served as Chair of the Communication Arts department until 1968, and was a Residence Advisor for 35 years. She retired in 1971.

Sr. Jean Marie Casey, OSU, died on October 24 at 100 years of age. Sr. Jean Marie worked for the College from 1939-1976 in a number of capacities.

Dr. Charles Daly, professor emeritus of Art, SAS, died on November 22 at the age of 86. Dr. Daly taught photography and graphic and media design from 1947-1985.
