Students
take the "Plunge"
in name of service
This year, 20 students from the School of Arts & Sciences and
School of Nursing will participate in the “Plunge,” an annual CNR
tradition of performing community service during spring break (March
6-13).

Painting
Commissioned for
Library Alumnae Reading Room
A reception was held on February 19 in Gill Library’s Alumnae
Reading Room for the unveiling of CNR,
Love One Another, a painting by
artist Laura James. Commissioned for the CNR Centennial, the painting
is a celebration of the College's diversity. Using bright colors,
intricate patterns, and sometimes surreal imagery, Ms. James, whose
style comprises Biblical themes using Ethiopian Christian iconography,
paints women, families and scenes of everyday life.

Dowell
Lecture Features CNN Correspondent Maria Hinojosa
New York City based CNN Correspondent, author, and women’s college
graduate Maria Hinojosa will be the featured speaker at CNR’s Dowell
Lecture on March 18, at 7 pm in Romita Auditorium on the Main Campus.
Ms. Hinojosa has covered numerous stories and events for the CNN
network, including the Amadou Diallo case verdict and the struggle of
Kosovar Albanians in the United States. Before joining CNN in 1997, Ms.
Hinojosa spent six years at National Public Radio as a New York City
based general assignment correspondent. During this time, she also
hosted Visiones, a
public-affairs talk show on WNBC-TV in New York. Ms.
Hinojosa continues her affiliation with NPR, anchoring Latino USA, a
weekly national program reporting on news and culture in the Latino
community.

Cornel
West
Speaks
at College
As part of the College’s Centennial celebration, Cornel West of
Princeton University spoke to an overflowing crowd in Holy Family
Chapel on Thursday afternoon, February 19. In an electrifying
presentation that was both passionate and perceptive, Dr. West spoke on
“At Our Heart: Diversity.”
Dr. West's words thrilled, delighted, and
engaged the enthralled audience of over seven hundred students, faculty
and invited guests who filled the chapel and the main parlors of the
Castle.

Students Participate
in cIcu’s Annual Lobby Day
in Albany
On February 10, CNR participated in the Commission on Independent
Colleges and Universities (cIcu) annual Lobby Day, an opportunity for
New York State college students, as well as faculty and staff, to meet
with state legislators in Albany and have their voices heard with
regard to issues of importance to their education, particularly the
continued availability of financial aid.

Through May 31, the College is hosting an exhibit of photographs by Dr.
Louis deSalle, Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Instruction at the
School of New Resources, entitled “Framing
Nature, Color, Form and
Light,” at the Gordon Parks Gallery on the John Cardinal
O’Connor
Campus at 332 East 149th Street, Bronx. The exhibit, Dr.
deSalle’s first solo effort, showcases landscapes transformed by
light.

President
McGuire of
Trinity
College to Receive Honorary
Degree from CNR
Patricia McGuire, President of Trinity College in Washington, D.C.,
will
speak at the Convocation “In
Celebration of Women’s Colleges,” on March
23. President McGuire will receive an honorary degree from The College
of New Rochelle.
McGuire, who earned her bachelor of arts degree cum laude from
Trinity College has been its president since 1989. President McGuire
also has her law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. She
is a member of the boards of directors of the Greater Washington Board
of Trade, Women's College Coalition, Eugene and Agnes Meyer Foundation,
D.C. Agenda Project, Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Company and Ameritas
Acacia Mutual Holding Company, Eastern High School Choir, and the
College Information Center.

Colloquy will take place the following day, March 24, at 4:00 p.m.,
on the Main Campus, during which Barbara McManus, Professor Emeritus of
Classics at CNR, will moderate a panel discussion on the future of
women’s
colleges in the U.S. The distinguished panelists will be Daniel S.
Cheever,
Jr., President, Simmons College, Boston, MA; Lisa Marsh Ryerson,
President,
Wells College, Aurora, NY; and Mary Pat Seurkamp, President, The
College of
Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore, MD.
Graduate
School
Hosts
Conference
A conference on “Resilience,” the ability to recover quickly
from hardship or misfortune, will take place on Saturday, March 27,
from 9 am to 1 pm, on the Main Campus in New Rochelle. The keynote
address, “Surviving & Thriving:
Multiple Aspects of Resilience,”
will be given by Dr. Claire Lavin, Professor of Psychology at CNR. The
closing address, “Resilience: A
Final Word,” will be given by Dr. Susan
Baum, Professor of Gifted and Talented Education at CNR. The conference
is open to CNR alumnae/i. Participants will choose from a variety of
workshops offered by Graduate School faculty on such topics as
Spiritual Fitness Training, Artistic Creativity, and Educational
Leadership as they relate to resilience.
