As today’s artists have recognized, the insignificant detritus of daily life can serve as the vehicle for broader inquiry into material culture and contemporary social values. Often overlooked or dismissed as lowly and insignificant, the ordinary and mundane has become then a worthy subject for creative exploration, inspiring discussion and debate, lingering and looking again in order to discover the philosophy of the everyday.

Reflections on Home, Hearth, Memory and Loss
December 6, 2011 - February 19, 2012

Dorie Klein, Snow Bed, 1998

(un)COMFORT(able) ZONE: Reflections on Home, Hearth, Memory and Loss, brings together the work of several artists, and their contributions to the personal and universal concepts of safe havens, personal space and comfort zones. Each of these terms define a psychological region or behavioral state within which one operates in an anxiety-free or neutral state-of-mind. Often these feelings are associated with the familiar, constant or steady associations to home, family, kinship and recurring tradition. This type of mental conditioning causes a person to reate and operate false boundaries, creating an unfounded sense of security. This domain or personal territory is not infallible and, at times, can and will be breached thus creating the “uncomfortable zone.” Whether this removal of sanctuary is voluntary or involuntary, its affects and lingering residuals are immediately apparent.

Jennifer Zazo

Sunday, December 11, 2011 from 2 - 4 p.m.
