In
early June 2006, construction of the Wellness Center began in earnest
with
the
removal of several trees and the College’s tennis courts to make way
for
CNR’s new sports facility, and excavation of the site soon followed. In
August,
the first forms were poured for the pool foundation as the building's
footprint
began to emerge.
By September, the
foundation
of the swimming pool was in place and October saw the footings and
foundation
of the locker rooms. To achieve all of this, deep drilling of the solid
rock
foundation was required. During the fall months, three huge drills were
working
simultaneously to remove rocks that will be recycled.
Construction
continued at the Wellness Center without interruption as
workers brave the very cold weather to keep on schedule. The “topping
off” phase was
completed by late February, marking a significant milestone in the
progress of the Wellness
Center's constructionWhen
completed, CNR’s interdisciplinary center will integrate all aspects of
health and wellness education in a holistic manner. The ecological
design of the building as a metaphor for wellness will be eligible for
certification by the U.S. Green Building Council under its Leadership
in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.
